OUR PHILOSOPHIES

"Both as individuals
and as a church, we know that God is still at
work enabling us to grow and mature."
Inclusivity
The richness of our community is that we seek to be
a truly inclusive church. We believe that "God so
loved the world" and we try in every way to
consistently reflect the belief that this means
everyone. In everything we do and say we are careful
that we do not exclude someone because of their
race, gender, age, physical challenges,
social-economic status, or sexual orientation. To
that end, we worship with inclusive language,
meaning that the language we use is not sexist,
racist, ageist, or classist. Our passion to be
inclusive is manifested in our commitment to build a
church for all people.
Healing and Wholeness
We recognize that we are a community in recovery. We
feel that the brokeness in our lives does not have
to remain, but can be replaced by the health and
wholeness that God intended for all of creation. We
believe that all people are in need of God's healing
touch and support. It is our understanding that to
follow Christ always requires that we overcome our
brokenness. Unlike some other churches, Metropolitan
Community Church invites people to bring their
brokenness to church, but expects that by bringing
it, the individual is seeking the healing that only
God can provide.
Every Member is a Minister
We believe that every Christian is called into
ministry. We are quite clear that Christ does not
call us into Christianity, but that Christ calls us
into ministry. Anyone is welcome to attend Sweet
Spirit as long as they wish without becoming a
member. When a person feels that they are ready to
be a member, we pray that they are making a
commitment to be in ministry through this church.
There are countless ways to serve God in this
community, but they cannot be done without people
who decide to heed Christ's call to "follow me."
Christian Caring
We believe that caring for those who are in need is
essential if we are to bear the title of Christians.
We strive to be a community reaching out to people
in their need whether it be physical, emotional, or
spiritual. In a world filled with the brokenness
caused by prejudice, poverty and disease, there is
tremendous need for the caring that we as a
community can provide. We pray that the spirit of
Christ is seen as the church reaches out with
scarred hands to care for others.
